Exodus describes how God gave Israel ten commandments. If only they had kept to them, then Israel would have been kept safe as they travelled through the wilderness and entered the promised land.

We’ve provided ten commandments to keep us safe as we travel through the online world.  If we keep to them, we can stay safe, as we enjoy the many blessings that the Internet can provide.

There are several people within Gold Hill who can help you understand and apply the commandments to your own situation. Just ask!

  1. Guard Your Personal Information
Share only what is necessary, and never reveal sensitive details like your address, financial information, or passwords to unknown people. Never disclose codes that have been texted or emailed to you.
  2. Use Strong and Unique Passwords
Create passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Use a different password for each account. Consider using a password manager.
  3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Wherever possible, add an extra layer of protection by enabling 2FA on your accounts and apps, including WhatsApp.
  4. Think before you click
Do not open links or attachments in suspicious emails or messages, even if they look legitimate. Don’t click on QR codes unless you know who supplied it. Beware of QR codes on posters which may have been faked.
  5. Keep Your Software Updated
Regularly update your operating system, apps, and antivirus software to stay protected against the latest threats.
  6. Secure Your Devices
Use screen locks and antivirus software. Install and use a VPN if you use public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities.
  7. Stay Alert on Social Media
Adjust privacy settings, avoid oversharing, and think before accepting friend requests or forwarding messages.
  8. Verify Before Trusting
If you receive a message from someone you don’t know (for example someone claiming to be part of Gold Hill on WhatsApp) or if you receive a message in an unusual way from a person you do know, then it may be a scam.  Verify the sender before you reply.
  9. Educate and Protect Loved Ones
Share safety tips with less tech-savvy friends, children, or elderly family members, and help them set up security measures.  Parents and carers will find helpful information about protecting children at: https://www.ceopeducation.co.uk/parents/
  10. Think Before You Post or Share
Do not forward unverified information you read online or receive on WhatsApp.
